Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Director – Strategy, Planning and Business Development (SPBD). 


As an Assistant Director, you will be responsible for planning, managing and overseeing the execution of strategic initiatives, as we work on some of the Medical Center’s most challenging problems and exciting opportunities. The projects are directly tied to the tremendous change we expect to see in the US health care system in both the short and long term, as well as the exciting changes taking place at NYULMC. Your role will be to help the team to advance the following goals:

Supporting the three interrelated missions of the NYU Langone Health – Clinical Care, Research, and Education – as those missions grow and evolve;

Supporting our system’s strategy of growing into an expanding health system;

Identifying and analyzing new business opportunities across a range of departments / divisions and business / operating units;

Formulating business and financial plans to improve and expand our current range of operations;

Developing goals and metrics for departments and projects, as needed, and supporting the achievement of these targets;

Connecting key strategic initiatives, projects and analyses to enable comprehensive and responsible decision-making at all levels of the organization;

Planning and managing the implementation of new business ventures and other projects.

Job Responsibilities:

Overseeing data collection, validation and the production of high-quality qualitative and quantitative assessments and analyses, to support strategic planning and program development;

Preparing, reviewing, and analyzing information and data related to current/proposed operations and strategic planning initiatives to develop recommendations and enable informed decision-making for operational, clinical or executive leaders across the institution;

Managing multiple large-scale projects requiring navigating through ambiguity, structuring institution-wide governance, demonstrating complex critical thinking, presenting to executive audiences and influencing multiple levels of the organization;

Acting as a subject-matter expert in projects, initiatives or operations, as appropriate and required. Presenting information clearly, reliably and understanding how the knowledge ties into the larger goals of the institution.

Adhering to best practice approaches to project management including developing project charters and implementation plans, managing against timelines, and providing timely updates on project status. Develops applicable process and outcome metrics to measure project success;

Exercises discretion and independent judgment in comparing and evaluating options and approaches to analyses or project management, including possible courses of conduct. Acting or making a decision after the various possibilities have been considered;

Making good decisions based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment, most of which turn out to be correct and accurate when judged over time;

Ability to maintain composure and critical thinking across complex projects; demonstrates the ability to manage and guide others through high levels of ambiguity;

Demonstrates a high degree of customer focus; adept at anticipating the needs of key clients and taking a proactive approach to relationship/project management;

Acts decisively and independently, with a high degree of ownership of projects and appropriate judgement. Escalates issues to departmental or Senior Leadership as needed, creating an appropriate sense of urgency;

Synthesizes complex information to communicate project deliverables and recommendations to senior management. Provides consultation or expert advice to senior management on projects;

Preparing presentations for and delivering presentations to the Director, Assistant Vice President and Senior Vice President of SP&BD and/or other senior executives (e.g., Vice Deans), paying careful attention to style nuances and preferences for each presenter or audience;

Providing support to the Director, Assistant Vice President and Senior Vice President of SP&BD across projects of varying sizes, and adhoc efforts or reporting;

Demonstrating knowledge of the organization’s core missions and values and incorporating them into the performance of all duties;

Takes a highly collaborative approach to completing the work, aligns and motivates others at various levels. Demonstrates the ability to navigate or engage peers and stakeholders across all levels to get the work done through formal and informal channels;

Rallies and inspires people, both within and external to SPBD, to take initiative or develop breakthrough solutions to improve outcomes;

Managing junior staff members on projects while serving as a project lead; setting others up for success and being responsible for the work quality, timeliness, attention to detail, messaging to audiences and interactions through-out the lifecycle of the project;

Helps others excel by ensuring they understand the landscape of a project, initiative or relationship; helps junior staff members make connections to enable work to get done effectively;

Providing guidance, mentorship, and coaching to junior staff, either formally or informally. Conducting performance reviews for direct reports;

Dealing effectively with issues raised or created by direct reports as such issues arise;

Champions project and non-project based initiatives within the department. Acts as a role-model for professionalism and exemplary work effort;

Works to elevate the technical and non-technical knowledge within the department through organizing or supporting team forums and best-practice sharing activities;

Elevates the overall knowledge within the team; finds effective ways to enhance the learning culture, identifying opportunities to build skills both on the job and in dedicated forums;

Maintains a high-level of self-awareness in interactions with all levels of the organization; adapts style accordingly; willing to take feedback and change appropriate, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify, candidates must have a minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience in healthcare program development, strategic planning, and/or facilities planning.

A graduate degree, preferably in health care administration, business administration, public health, or the equivalent years of experience, is preferred.

The candidate must have strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, organizational, people management, project management, strategic planning, customer service, teamwork, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred candidates will be action-oriented, with experience managing aggressive deadlines, strong technical proficiencies (e.g., highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).  

Ability to exercise discretion, good independent judgment, and independent thinking in selecting the optimal course of action. Experience managing small to mid-sized teams.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
