The Transportation Planner develops and advertises school bus routes. The planner supervises employees and coordinates problems and closures with parents and other employees. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) and is represented by the Anchorage Council of Education bargaining unit.
The following are required:
A high school diploma or equivalent education.
Two years of experience supervising employees.
Knowledge of type of equipment used and scheduling of employees.
Knowledge and understanding of computers and related equipment.
Knowledge of Municipality of Anchorage street network.
Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports.
Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with others.
The following are preferred:
Knowledge of laws and regulations governing the transportation of students.
Understanding of Geographic Information Systems.
Essential Job Functions
Plans, develops, and maintains school bus routes and schedules.
Prepares school bus stop listings and distributes to schools.
Notifies parents of school bus route schedules. Schedules are to be posted on the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. website before the start of school each year and updated during the school year as routes are modified.
Supervises and evaluates school bus route schedulers, activities clerk, secretary, and other personnel assigned to the routing section.
Selects and trains the temporary clerk assigned to the routing department at the beginning of each school year.
Acts as liaison with software vendor of school bus routing program regarding software upgrades, maintenance, and training.
Establishes ongoing training programs on computer routing software.
Assists in the development of transportation policies and procedures.
Coordinates with parents, principals, and program coordinators in resolving problems and complaints about school bus routes, schedules, and field trips.
Compiles reports and documents for submission to the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development.
Coordinates requests for transportation with other departments.
Assists with the preparation of the departmental budget.
Acts as liaison with Alaska Department of Transportation and Municipality of Anchorage regarding road closures and construction projects.
Coordinates onsite reviews of potential school bus stops with safety officers.
Represents the Transportation Department during boundary discussions and attends all boundary task force meetings and public hearings.
Assists planning department in determining the effect of boundary changes on transportation program.
Serves as a member of the Hazardous Transportation Committee.
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
